A successful mentoring relationship is a two-way street. While mentors offer guidance, insights, and support, it’s up to the mentee to make the most of the experience. Whether you're just starting your mentoring journey or already have a mentor, knowing how to show up as a proactive and respectful mentee is key to your growth. Here are the top do’s and don'ts of being a great mentee.

DO: Set clear goals

Before you start your mentorship, take time to reflect on what you want to achieve. Are you aiming to transition careers, improve leadership skills, or navigate a workplace challenge? Clear goals help guide the relationship and give your mentor direction on how to best support you.

DON'T: Expect your mentor to have all the answers

Mentors are experienced, but they aren’t fortune-tellers or therapists. They can guide you and share from experience, but they won’t solve all your problems. The responsibility for making decisions and taking action remains with you.

DO: Take initiative

Be proactive in scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, and following up on tasks. The more ownership you take, the more value you’ll gain from the relationship. Come to each session with questions, updates, or challenges you want to discuss.

DON'T: Cancel last minute or be inconsistent

Respect your mentor’s time. Avoid rescheduling unless absolutely necessary, and always give advance notice if something comes up. Consistency is key to building trust and maintaining momentum.

DO: Be open to feedback

One of the greatest benefits of mentoring is receiving honest, constructive feedback. Embrace it with curiosity rather than defensiveness. Even uncomfortable insights can be opportunities for growth.

DON'T: Take feedback personally

Remember that feedback is meant to help you, not to criticize you. Try to separate your sense of self-worth from your professional development. Focus on what you can learn and apply.

DO: Show appreciation

Mentoring can be tough. A simple thank you or a message acknowledging how their advice helped you can go a long way in strengthening the relationship.

DON'T: Treat it like a one-way street

A good mentoring relationship involves mutual respect. While your mentor may be more experienced, you can still offer insights, enthusiasm, or support in return. Think of it as a partnership.

DO: Reflect and apply what you learn

After each session, take time to reflect on what you discussed and how you can apply it. Set small, actionable steps based on your mentor’s input. This is how change happens.

DON'T: Expect instant results

Personal and professional growth takes time. Don't get discouraged if you don’t see immediate progress. Trust the process and stay consistent.
