How to transition from a full-time job to entrepreneurship

Maybe you have read our post on Why 2021 is the best year to start a business and have already considered becoming an entrepreneur. That’s fantastic! But before you are ready to set up your business, here are a few tips on how to avoid some major hiccups. And if you are still struggling to decide on how to get started, get a professional mentor to help you succeed!

1. Prepare well

You will never be 100% ready, but at some point, you just have to jump. However, the better you prepare, the less (unpleasantly) surprised you will be. Once you have an idea in mind, the first step in succeeding is to gain relevant experience. Without those, people will not take you seriously. If you are unsure about what kind of skills you need, an experienced mentor will advise what to focus on and how to get maximum results for minimum effort. As in today’s fast-paced environment, all entrepreneurs need to keep constantly working on themselves.

2. Do your research

Before you make any change happen, you should know what you are doing. Talking to a more senior professional in the field of your interest is likely to be one of the easiest ways of getting to know a new industry. However, if you are determined to succeed, an online search is also a must. Therefore, do your homework before you dive in. Being prepared helps when growing your network, so you can show your new contacts you know what you are talking about.

3. Get feedback

So you have a clear idea in your head, maybe you prepared a business plan. Well, now starts the stage of endless iterations and updates (you’ve been warned!). At this stage, you must gain all your courage, go out and talk to people (luckily for introverts, it all happens virtually now). Your main mission is to gain feedback from your target audience and sharpen your idea before you finally introduce it to the market. Whatever it is, make sure you are aiming for a certain group of customers, don’t just create something there is no need or demand for.

4. Find some support

With a mentor by your side, you are more likely to gain the necessary courage and strength to avoid all the obstacles you might face at the beginning (lack of time, finance, etc.). A mentor is your guide who will be there for you when you need them, but they also help in making your transition a tiny bit smoother. So for everyone who realises that you can’t change the world alone, there is always the option to get a mentor who provides the additional support needed.

5. Transfer gradually

Once you gain the relevant knowledge, skills, expertise, and connections, start transitioning. But remember to take it easy! Don’t set up your business right away, instead, focus on what you have learned and how you can implement it in your current career. Maybe go freelance, maybe set up your business on the side, and keep your full-time job first. This will allow you to constructively build a brand and connect with like-minded individuals or potential clients and collaborators, whilst maintaining a solid income and some level of certainty in your life. Setting up a business is not a competition, so take your time and make sure you are well-prepared.

And once that’s done? Well, the story has just begun. Now the biggest challenge awaits - to survive in the real world shark tank. But again, if you have a professional mentor by your side, the challenges you are likely to face will be much easier to deal with than if you were to do it alone. And so, if you are bursting with ideas or dying to make a change in your career, join our mentoring program and get professional support to help you become a successful entrepreneur.

Dealing with boys' club culture in the tech industry

Last Thursday I visited the “Women in Tech” event organized by Femme Palette. The event included a couple of panel discussions and multiple talks given by brilliant and inspiring women. What struck me most was the atmosphere of openness, vulnerability and honesty accompanied by great humor and mutual support. It was a complete contrast to the generally more dry tech events I regularly frequent. I loved it! During the event there was one phrase that frequently came up: “The boys’ club”.
